Where did you find the inspiration for your novel, The Rest Falls Away?
Colleen
I started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer a few years ago, and as I got engrossed in the story, I began to wonder what it would have been like for Buffy’s predecessors - the Slayers who’d lived in more restrictive times.
I mean, it was hard enough for Buffy to handle being a high school girl in the 21st century, but what would it have been like for a woman who lived earlier?
And then about that same time, I happened to watch Cinderella and when Cinderella ran out on the prince at the stroke of midnight, it reminded me of Buffy - and I thought to myself, “Wouldn’t it be fun if she were running off to stake a vampire?”
And that was where the germ of the idea came from, and off I went from there!

What was particularly challenging about writing this story?
Colleen
What I found most challenging about the story was keeping the three main heroes separate and distinct in their speech and actions, and what they wanted and how they interacted with Victoria. Each of them want/need something different from her, and it was important to keep that distinct.

What do you love most about your hero and heroine?
Colleen
I love the fact that Victoria, while brave and intelligent, is also flawed. She does make mistakes, she does try to do what many women do - she wants to do everything, and do it all well.
As for the heroes, I love the way each of them interacts with her in a different way.

How would you describe your heroes Rockley, Sebastian and Max in terms of chocolate?
Colleen
Well, let’s see….
Rockley is milk chocolate with sweet toffee bits - he’s firm and sweet and very British, very proper
Sebastian would be a milk chocolate truffle with raspberry filling, dipped in nuts. Very sweet, very rich, sooo good, but you know it’s bad for you…yet impossible to resist
Max would be simple, sharp high-cacao-content dark chocolate - a little bitter, smooth, and because it’s healthy for you, a little on the righteous side.
And, yes, in The Rest Falls Away there are three potential heroes and it’s not until the fifth and final book in the series (As Shadows Fade) that Victoria settles on her one true love.
